NVUSD welcomes new Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services
Posted 3/31/17

Mary Ann Valles, director of student services at Brentwood Union Mary Ann VallesSchool District in Contra Costa County, has been named NVUSD’s assistant superintendent  for instructional services, starting July 1, 2017. Valles’s appointment was approved at a meeting of the NVUSD Board of Education earlier this month.

Valles succeeds Elena Toscano, who is retiring in June after 12 years in the position.

Valles will oversee the Department of Instruction, which provides the development and implementation of all educational programs and services to ensure that each student is provided with a quality educational experience. That includes academic oversight of the District’s 31 schools, their administrators and their teachers, plus development of the District’s Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), which offers goals and strategies for effective use of state funds.

“Mrs. Valles will continue our ongoing efforts to provide students the educational experiences they need for college and careers in the 21st century,” said Superintendent Patrick Sweeney. “She has a proven background in leading schools and we were impressed with her commitment to excellence and equity. We look forward to having her here.”

Valles spent 13 years as a principal at middle and high schools, as well as chief accountability officer with Hayward Unified School District. Prior to becoming an administrator, she was a teacher and counselor at the high school level. She has an undergraduate degree in psychology from California State University Los Angeles and master’s degrees in counseling and educational leadership from San Francisco State University.

“I am delighted to be joining the NVUSD team,” Valles said. “I look forward to being a member of the community, learning more about the programs and services provided to our students, and innovating with teachers and leaders to ensure that all of our students graduate ready for college and careers.”

The Instruction Department has an annual budget of about $50 million and includes 1,180 teachers, administrators and other educational personnel.

Valles and her husband of 28 years live in San Leandro, and Valles will spend the school week in Napa.
