Education Matters

Education Matters is our monthly column published in the Napa Valley Register and American Canyon Eagle. The fourth Tuesday and Thursday of each month, we discuss a topic of interest to students, parents and the greater community.

Food Service this week

We want to clarify that school breakfast and lunch are not free to all students this week. We realize that many families have had a change in housing or income status due to the fires, and we will provide breakfast and lunch at no charge to those students while we work to get the proper paperwork completed.

To complete an application for Free or Reduced Price Lunch, visit www.nvusd.org/foodservices or ask for an application at your school site office.

If you are new to the NVUSD attendance area and want to enroll your child, you can find your neighborhood school at www.nvusd.org/enroll.

Oct. 24 Food Day is postponed

The organizers of Food Day, which was scheduled for Oct. 24 at the shared campus of Harvest Middle School and River School, have decided to postpone the event. The event sponsors, including the County of Napa, Napa County Local Food Advisory Council, Napa County Farm Bureau, Healthy Cooking with Kids, UC Master Gardeners of Napa and Napa Valley Unified School District, hope to reschedule the event.

No school on Friday, Oct. 27

Our student calendar for this year includes a non-student day on Friday, Oct. 27, and that has not changed. We are working with our teachers and other instructional staff on options for recovering student learning lost during the fire emergency. We expect to have a strategy in place soon, and will share it widely with parents as soon as it is available.

Elementary school conferences

Many of our elementary schools were scheduled to hold parent-teacher conferences the week of Oct. 9. Each school will contact parents directly to reschedule those important meetings. The goal is to complete all the rescheduled conferences before the Thanksgiving break.

Call your child’s school if you have questions.

Safety and Security Parent meeting postponed

The Safety and Security Parent Meeting that was scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 25, will be postponed until November. The event will feature an update from the School Planning and Construction office on fencing, gates, cameras and other security upgrades made possible in part by Measure H funds; a description of our safety drills, including fire, earthquake, teacher down and our updated lockdown protocols; and a description of emergency communications protocols; as well as the role of parents in an emergency.

The new date will be announced through ConnectEd messages and the electronic parent newsletter.

Oct. 26 School Expo canceled

The NVUSD School Expo that was scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 26, has been canceled. As the Open Enrollment period continues, parents are encouraged to contact schools of interest to arrange a tour and meet the staff.
