Family Resource Center Opens at Napa Junction Elementary
Posted 2/17/22

A collaborative community partnership came to fruition recently as American Canyon’s first school-based Family Resource Center (FRC) opened on the Napa Junction Elementary School campus. The center provides a range of services and classes to families, including technology, ESL, job application support, emergency financial assistance, and referrals for social services for any family in American Canyon.

With a unique partnership between NVUSD, On the Move, a non-profit organization, the Napa Valley Vintners Association, and the Napa Valley Education Foundation, the center fills a gap in services desperately needed in American Canyon. NVUSD provides the operational support for facilities - in this case, on the newly constructed Napa Junction campus, On the Move helps with programming and staffing, Napa Valley Vintners Association provided capital funding of $1 million for the construction of the center, and the Napa Valley Education Foundation administered the funds for the construction.

"This Family Resource Center is the first school-based center of its kind in American Canyon, providing families easy access to a multitude of comprehensive services," said Noreen Montgomery, principal of Napa Junction Elementary School.

The Napa Junction Family Resource Center is one of five in NVUSD — other centers are located at Shearer, McPherson, Snow, and Phillips elementary schools. All centers are open to the public, and clients do not need to have a student enrolled in NVUSD to receive services.

“We know one of the best ways to support the student is to also support the family and that is why our five FRC’s are strategically located and accessible to all families and the broader community,” said Matt Manning, Director of Curriculum, Instruction and English Learner Services-Elementary.

According to Elsa Nunez, FRC site coordinator, planning for the Napa Junction FRC opening included extensive community surveys and data gathering in determining the types of services to offer. Nunez also relies on a steering committee comprised of members from the city government, school leadership, and community organizations and stakeholders. And Nunez herself has deep ties to the community, having lived in American Canyon for 14 years and serving in various school-based volunteer roles, including a member of Napa Junction's PTA board from 2014 - 2020.

"For me, this role is so rewarding because I know we can help individuals meet their goals," said Nunez. And her continued dedication will help evolve and expand programming over time as demand increases. Nunez also wants to offer paid internships to adults and teens and expand class and workshop options.
