A Message in Response to the Texas School Shootings
Posted 5/24/22

Dear NVUSD Community,

As the nation is processing the horrific news of the shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, and the unspeakably tragic loss of life that confronts us as a community yet again, I am compelled to share my deep, profound sadness for these families and the entire Uvalde school community. It is difficult to think of the tremendous grief and suffering the parents are experiencing. My heart goes out to them, and we hold them close in our thoughts.

We know these events are scary and unsettling for our students and staff and we need to stand together as we process yet another act of mass violence in our country. For those struggling, our district provides a wide array of emotional support resources through our student wellness program, and the Care Solace program is available to help students, families and staff find the right community-based provider in the mental health space. Please take advantage of these free, confidential resources if your student or a family member needs counseling or any type of emotional support.

In addition, I would like to remind everyone that the NVUSD Board of Education passed a resolution supporting safe gun storage in May of 2021. This resolution along with resources like Be Smart for Kids remind us that every adult can play a role in keeping our kids and communities safer. Let’s make sure we are all doing our part.

Please join me in sending collective love and strength to all those affected by this horrendous, senseless crime. Our hearts go out to our fellow educators and students in Texas as they grapple with this senseless and tragic violence.

Sincerely,
