Strong Bonds of Friendship and Community For Filipinx Students
Posted 5/27/22

"Snap snap snap."

Fingers around the room showed support for members of FLAGG (Filipinx Life and Generation Groups) during a recent meeting in the Wellness Center at American Canyon High School.

Weekly FLAGG meetings bring together students from ACHS and ACMS as well as adult mentors and student leaders to encourage the sharing of issues and concerns in a safe and non-judgmental environment. The snapping represents acknowledgement and support for anyone who shares a personal story.

During this particular meeting, students and guests shared one High (a positive story) and one Low (a challenging or upsetting story) from the week. A goal setting activity was next, followed by a large group discussion that prompted the question, "What is a concern you have about being an adult?" Answers included "I don't know what my career will be" to "doing my taxes!"

"The Filipino culture has many commonalities but we also have a lot of diversity within our own community," said Clarence Mamaril, NVEF Filipinx Community Liaison and FLAGG Coordinator. "This intergenerational forum is a big help for the health and wellness of students, and especially for Filipino youth who face unique challenges and stigmas."

FLAGG is a program of the Napa Valley Education Foundation (NVEF). Kristin Anderson, Director of Programs for NVEF, participated in the meeting. "We are thrilled to be able to offer this program thanks to generous funding from the County of Napa's PEI program, and we are grateful to Clarence who has dedicated his time and effort," she said. "Being part of the discussion was truly rewarding and a reminder that we have outstanding youth in our community!"

Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
The May meeting fell during national Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month - a time to recognize these distinct cultures and celebrate how they make our schools and broader community more vibrant.
