Reopening Schools: Phase Two


introducing the in-person/online hybrid model

NVUSD has been cleared by Napa County Public Health officials to begin moving to in-person instruction. In keeping with our phased approach to reopening, we are preparing to move into Phase Two which is a hybrid of in-person/online or 100% virtual learning models, depending on each family’s preference. 

We plan to begin in-person instruction on a two-day a week schedule in the pre-assigned cohorts in mid-October. In preparation, our teams are finalizing all the safety and operational requirements to welcome students, teachers, and staff back to campus, in collaboration with our union representatives.



We Need to Hear From You

The Phase Two Enrollment Form is required in order for NVUSD to assess the number of students who will be returning to in-person learning on campus. This form must be filled out for each student and completed by Friday, September 18. For your information, we've compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions below that we will continue to add to and evolve as more information is confirmed.

Q: Are students required to come back to campus?
No, families have a choice on whether to return to the two-day per week hybrid learning model or remain in 100 percent distance learning. All families are required to make a choice regarding their preferred learning model by Friday, September 18.

Q: For those that choose the in-person/hybrid option, which days will be designated for in-person and which days will be designated for distance learning?
Students in the in-person/hybrid model will attend classes either in the morning or afternoon based on their current cohort group.

Q: For the in-person days, how many students maximum will you allow in a classroom?
Our ability to arrange classrooms with social distancing will guide our decisions on class sizes. 

Q: How will students who remain in virtual learning engage with their teacher and classmates?
For secondary, students who remain on full distance learning will log into their class on the days when the class is offering in-person instruction and will connect to the class virtually via a camera that will be in the classroom. For elementary, students will continue to access a teacher virtually and remain with those students in the class who are also remaining virtual.

Q: Can we change our choice from virtual to in-person once the in-person model has begun?
Due to the need to balance all cohorts and classes we will not be able to change a student from distance learning to in-person/hybrid until January 2021.  At that time we will assess the space available for in-person learning.

Q: Will students, classes and teachers remain the same for in-person learning?
All students will have the same schedule and cohorts but we cannot guarantee that your child will have the same teacher due to the many variables involved with giving families the choice of in-person vs. online.

If your child is in an online environment with a particular teacher and then opts to stay online even when other students go back to the classroom, it will depend on the grade and situation. We will need to resource our teachers differently depending on the numbers that we find from the survey. This could result in your child having a different teacher -- although every effort will be made to keep classes together with the teacher. It all will depend on the enrollment form results.

Q: How will Early Flight work?
Early flight classes present a challenge in certain scenarios where a student would need to come for early flight, and then leave to return for the PM cohort.  We are currently determining the best way to make this work, whether it is remaining Virtual for all students or providing time before the start of the PM cohort.

Q: Some classes at secondary level have large cohorts already such as orchestra, band, and choir, how will those classes go in-person?
We are currently working with our Site Administrators and Teachers to determine the best way to facilitate these classes.  As the pandemic shifts, so does guidance from the Public Health Office.  There are currently specific requirements around Choir and Band because of the aerosol spray produced when singing or playing a brass / woodwind instrument.

Q: How will hands-on classes like robotics, wood shop and precision machine tools shop work?
There are elements of these courses that are hands-on with the specific equipment for each class.  There are also opportunities and elements of the courses where students learn specific tools, digital usually, that support their knowledge in how these industries work holistically.  These courses are offered through the Napa County Office of Education, and the teachers are engaged in weekly collaboration by the industry sector to brainstorm ideas and solutions for their course pathways.

Q: Will there be recess or any breaks during the in-person schedule?
There are not any breaks or recess built into the schedule.  Students will have their 2.5 hours of classroom instruction, and then will leave campus for AM, or arrive for their 2.5 hours at the start of the PM session.  Secondary students will have a passing period of 7 minutes between each class.

 Q: Will students and teachers be required to wear masks during in-person learning?
All staff shall use cloth face coverings unless Cal/OSHA standards require respiratory protection. Students in grades 3 - 12 are required to wear face coverings while on campus. Face coverings are strongly recommended for students in TK – grade 2.

Q: Will there be any temperature checks at school?
All persons entering a school or district facility will be required to conduct a Health Self Checker each day. By entering the campus, you are confirming you have completed your daily health self-check. More information can be found in the Napa County Office of Education website. [English] [Spanish]

Q: How often will classrooms be cleaned?
The maintenance department has detailed schedules and protocols for cleaning.  Frequently touched items regularly using disinfecting wipes. In addition, restrooms will be cleaned more thoroughly throughout the school day.

Q: How will drop-off work for younger students?
Parents will not be permitted to walk their younger children on campus. There will be a consistent drop off location monitored by teachers and staff to facilitate drop off. 

Q: Will the school district consider requiring flu shots?
NVUSD follows state law which mandates the immunizations found here (SP). Flu shots are not currently required by the state of California.

Q: What additional safety protocols will be in place at the site level?

  1. Where practicable, physical distancing of six feet is maintained between adults and students; four to six feet distance is permissible between students within a classroom or instructional area where requirements herein are in practice.

  2. For elementary, stable classroom cohorts (up to standard class size at each respective grade level) are maintained throughout each school day, and through each quarter or semester, with an assigned primary cohort teacher, and systems are in place to prevent the mixing of classroom cohorts. 

  3. A School Site-Specific Protection Plan (SSPP) outlining the above measures is completed, posted and shared with all stakeholders and updated as state and local Public Health guidance dictates.

  4. Where practicable, desks are arranged facing forward to minimize face to face proximity between students.

  5. Routes for entry and exit to the campus will be designated for each classroom cohort, using as many entrances/exits as feasible.

  6. Schedules for arrivals, recess and lunch will be strategically coordinated to prevent mixing of classroom cohorts.

  7. Congregate movement through hallways will be minimized as much as practicable.

  8. Large gatherings (i.e., school assemblies) are currently prohibited.

  9. The use of outdoor space for instructional purposes is maximized, shared, and coordinated to ensure students remain in their cohort.

  10. Use of shared playground equipment will be limited in favor of physical activities that require less contact with surfaces, and shared equipment will be cleaned between uses. 

  11. Use of non-classroom space for instruction such as gymnasiums and multi-use rooms should be considered to support physical distancing with cleaning between uses.

  12. Training will be provided for staff and students on proper use of face coverings which will include instruction to minimize touching of face coverings.

  13. Sharing of supplies, manipulatives, toys, sports equipment, and other learning and recreational materials will be limited and each student will have separate individually labeled boxes or cubbies.

  14. Sharing of electronic devices, clothing, books and other games or learning aides will be avoided as much as practicable.

  15. Use of privacy boards or clear screens will be considered as much as practicable.

  16. Non-essential visitors, including parent volunteers, will be limited and essential workers will be required to adhere to all health and safety guidelines.  Each site must establish a check-in location at the school site.

Q: Will buses be available for students who wish to attend in-person?
Currently, due to physical distancing requirements we cannot offer transportation services. There will be services provided for students with special needs.
