What is Project Lit?

Project Lit is a national, grassroots literacy movement committed to increasing access to high-quality, culturally relevant and sustaining books and to promoting a love of reading in schools and communities across America.

Project LIT is not just about books; it’s also about belonging. It’s about building a community of readers and writers. It’s about empowering our young people and providing our students with as many positive literacy experiences as possible through books that…

  • allow all students to see themselves in the pages.
  • communicate to all students that their voices and their stories matter—that they matter.
  • encourage us to write stories of our own.
  • spark important, necessary conversations.
  • remind us that we’re not alone.
  • inspire us to make a difference. inspire students to fall in love with reading again or for the first time.
Goals of Project Lit

EMPOWER our students as readers, writers and leaders

PROMOTE a love of reading in our schools and communities

NURTURE authentic reading identities by increasing access to high-quality books, building community and fostering a sense of belonging

CHAMPION young people and books that reflect their lived realities, communities and identities

ADVOCATE for literacy policies and practices that will build lifelong readers

SUPPORT AND INSPIRE one another as we improve our practice and pedagogy

READ, DISCUSS AND CELEBRATE books that make our students feel seen, heard, affirmed and valued

DEVELOP our cultural competence and EXPAND our thinking, regardless of individual starting point

AMPLIFY voices and stories of students and educators of color

REWRITE the narrative about which texts and authors are deemed worthy of academic study

PROVIDE students with as many positive literacy experiences as possible

Project Lit for Middle School

RESOURCES: Teachingbooks.net pairs resources (activities, book guides, lesson plans, etc.) with book titles that further reading enjoyment, contextual knowledge, and educational relevance. Click the book cover image to see resources.

CULTURAL RELEVANCE: Looking for titles featuring Latinx characters or other underrepresented groups? Look for the "Cultural Experience" tags in the Teachingbooks.net descriptions. 

DIGITAL ACCESS: Library Services can assign titles via OverDrive/Sora quickly and easily. Students can take notes inside the platform, export them to Google Drive or retrieve them in Sora even after the checkout period expires. Learn more about TAKING AND USING NOTES in Sora

Project Lit in the Classroom

Titles for the Project Lit program are approved for extracurricular after-school reading.

Library Services can assign titles via OverDrive/Sora for 90 days quickly and easily. When students open the Overdrive/Sora app, the title will appear in their assignments at the top of the screen on "day one."
