Bilingual Pueblo Vista Student Receives Top Honor

On March 1, Ava Osborne, a sixth-grade student in the dual language immersion program at Pueblo Vista Elementary School received an envelope from the Board of Directors of the California Association of Bilingual Education (CABE). In December, her family encouraged her to submit an essay she wrote in English and Spanish about how bilingualism has shaped her identity and enabled her to positively impact her school and community. It was her first time submitting her writing to a contest, so she did not know what to expect. However, she was invested emotionally because she was proud of her essay and wanted to make her family proud.

Upon receiving the letter those feelings resurfaced and with nervous anticipation, she opened the envelope. Inside, she found a letter from the CABE board that began, “Congratulations!” As her nervous anticipation gave way to joyful pride, she learned that she was selected as the winner in its essay contest among all 6th-8th grade applicants from schools throughout California. On April 1, Ava will be honored at the annual virtual  CABE Conference where she will read her essay in English and Spanish.
