NVUSD Wellness Council
NVUSD recognizes the link between student health and learning. The NVUSD Wellness Council was created to manage a comprehensive program promoting healthy eating and physical activity for our students. Positive, safe and health-promoting learning environments need to be in place for students to achieve personal, academic, developmental and social success.
The Council is also developing strategies for promoting staff wellness and for involving parents/guardians and the community in reinforcing students' understanding and appreciation of the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
1. All students have access to healthy food and beverages-both through reimbursable school meals and other foods available throughout the school campus-in accordance with Federal and state nutrition standards.
2. All students receive high quality physical education and physical activity, with opportunities to be physically active before, during and after school.
3. Each school is a safe, clean, and healthy place in which students, staff and families can learn, work and engage.
4. Each school has a positive school climate that nurtures learning, achievement and development of character.
5. All students receive quality nutrition education and other health education to become "health literate" - that is, able to make health-enhancing choices and avoid behaviors and eating that can damage health and well-being.
6. All students have access to health services in partnership with schools, Wellness Centers, school nurses, community agencies and/or families.
7. Schools engage in nutrition and physical activity and other activities that promote student wellness.
8. School staff are encouraged and supported to practice healthy nutrition and physical activity behaviors in and out of school.
